Police charge driver with alleged assault and battery for his wife

Lagos State Police on Wednesday arrested a 46-year-old man, Friday Efebe, who allegedly beat his wife, leaving her with a swollen face and a broken arm.

Efebe, a commercial driver whose address is unknown, was arraigned in a Badagry Magistrates Court on three counts of assault, failure to provide necessaries of life for his children and breach of peace.

He pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The prosecutor, ASP Ikem Uko, told the court that the accused committed the offenses on December 30, 2022 and March 24, at around 6:00 p.m. at the extension Gbanko, Igbanko, Badagry, Lagos.

Uko testified that the defendant physically assaulted his wife by beating her mercilessly and causing her serious injuries.

"My Lord, as a result of the beating, the woman's face was swollen while her left hand was broken.

"When he assaulted his wife on December 30, 2022, we warned him and he promised not to touch her, but this time she ended up in Badagry General Hospital.

"The defendant also failed in his responsibility as a father to provide the necessities of life for his three children.

"The accused behaved in a manner likely to disturb public order by beating his wife in public.

“The offenses were in violation of Sections 245, 247 and 168 of the Lagos State Criminal Law, 2015,” he said.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr. Patrick Adekomaiya, granted the defendant bail in the amount of N100,000 with two bail bonds of a similar amount.

Adekomaiya said one of the sureties must have a paid job

He adjourned the case until April 24, for notice.
