Police arrest 3 shepherds for killing a man in Anambra Forest

Anambra State Police have arrested three Fulani herdsmen in connection with the murder of a man known as 'Energy'.

A now deceased man, Energy, believed to be an indigenous Umunya in Oyi local government area, was lured into the forest earlier Thursday by herders to buy cattle.

Energy was said to need a cow and had been put in touch with a Fulani herder, who ordered her to come to their camp to buy the cow.

According to a video circulating online, it was observed that Energy had contacted a truck driver to take him to the Fulani herders' camp, which is believed to be in the Aguleri forest.

According to the truck driver, who spoke in a video, "We were on our way to see the cows, but noticed we were going into the bush, and I may not have anywhere to back my vehicle.

"I told the Fulani shepherd, but he insisted that we continue. We had just advanced a bit when up to 10 shepherds came out of the bush with guns and attacked us.

“They grabbed me and my brother and Energy ran away. They chased him, and some were taking us into the bush.

"Later my brother escaped and started running, so when they chased him, I found out I was alone, so I ran to my vehicle and escaped We came back later and found Energy had been killed,” the man said.

In the meantime, the State Police Command confirmed that the incident took place in Aguleri and that three Fulani men had been arrested in connection with the murder.

DSP Toochukwu Ikenga, spokesperson for Anambra State Police Command, told our correspondent that the investigation has begun and further information will be released to reporters.

Villagers in rural Anambra have started a campaign, however, warning the natives to refrain from following Fulani herders into the forest to buy cattle, thinking it is cheaper.

Posts circulating on social media have warned that it is dangerous to do so, as conventional cattle herders have joined with the bandits to trick unsuspecting people into the forest, where they are robbed and kidnapped or even killed.
