Police arrest suspected IPOB members 'participating in robbery operation' in Anambra

Three armed robbery suspects, who confessed to Anambra State Police officers that they were members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), have been arrested in Anambra State .

Spokesman for the State Police Command, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga revealed this in a press release made available to the Nigerian Tribune in Awka on Saturday.

Ikenga said the men involved in a robbery operation engaged police at a checkpoint during a shooting match, after being flagged for a search.

Ikenga said, "I am delighted to provide you with an update on the achievements recorded by the Command in our fight against crime and crime. We have made significant progress in reducing crime rates and in the guarantee of a lasting peace for the safety and security of the citizens of the State.

"On 27/4/2023 at 7:50 p.m., the Forward Operation (FOB) in Aguata, while on stop and search duty on the Afor Nnobi road, intercepted two vehicles, a Lexus jeep brown unmarked and a black Jeep Prado with Reg Nos. GWA 696 CM, Abuja.

"The occupants of the vehicle, who refused to stop when police reported them, began firing sporadically to escape police control. Officers engaged the gunmen in a shootout, rescued the one of their victims and arrested three of the gang members suspected of being IPOB members.

"While other gang members have escaped, the suspects currently in custody have confessed to being members of the banned group ESN/IPOB and have mentioned the various criminal camps/hideouts from which they operate."

Command said a number of incriminating items were found on the thugs, including: three AK-47s, two cell phones, two body armor, two walkie-talkies, a police uniform ( camouflage), 4 AK-47 magazines, one hundred and twenty live ammunition, a police belt, a glove, a pair of police boots, two police caps, a military t-shirt and a blue police uniform.

He gave the names of the arrested suspects: Haicynth Ujwuika aged 45, Sunday Samuel Akpan aged 31 and Chinonso Offor alias Wolf aged 24.

Ikenga said efforts were in place to secure the arrest of a fugitive gang member.
