Inspector General of Police Usman Baba has begun efforts for the renovation, demolition and reconstruction of dilapidated structures in police barracks across Nigeria.

Muyiwa Adejobi, the force's public relations officer, told reporters on the sidelines of Kemsan Acres Global Ltd's fourth anniversary awards dinner/party. in Ibadan.

Mr. Adejobi was reacting to the recent collapse of a police barracks building in Sango, Ibadan and some abandoned structures scattered across police barracks across the country.

He said the IGP has developed strategies to ensure that police officers and their families live comfortably in a very decent environment.

The Force's public relations officer described the incident at Sango Police Barracks, Ibadan, as very unfortunate, saying efforts were underway to map some of them to make a adequate renovation.

"In fact, there are some that we are considering tearing down altogether. The IGP is in discussion with the Police Trust Fund and relevant MDAs - Ministry of Police Affairs.

"Sometimes there is no way we want to have adequate and proper renovation of police barracks without having interventions.

“So the IGP has taken the bull by the horns to make sure that we access most of these things and talk to the relevant MDAs to see what we can do,” he said .

Mr. Adejobi also said that thrIGP had over the last 18 months renovated some and built no less than 125 new police stations with adjoining standard barracks.

"As I speak to you, we have built no less than 125 new police stations, with adjoining standard barracks, that when you live in such a place, you feel honoured.

"You will have self-esteem that you live in a very decent place. So it's a gradual thing. We can't end it all at once.

"Remember we have thousands of barracks across the country. It's not a day-to-day thing. It's a process we started," he said.

He Adejobi said the IGP is thinking outside the box to see how the issues at the barracks can be adequately addressed.

He expressed his displeasure with the state of some barracks, saying that was why constant talks with the police were needed to keep the barracks clean.

The force spokesperson said they are looking at many things to ensure the barracks are rejuvenated, protected and maintained.
