Poloc CC to disband after 145 years following fruitless talks with new Shawholm tenant

The W Academy, which trains children in South Glasgow, plans to run camps all year round which leaves no room for cricket to continue.

A previous meeting of Poloc members determined that the club would no longer operate if they lost access to Shawholm . The club's 143-year lease will officially end on April 30.

Shawholm hosted first cricket match televised from Scotland in 1955, is home to a distinctive six-hole R&A recognized golf course and has hosted international cricketers throughout its history.

But owners Pollok and Corrour Ltd terminated Poloc's lease last month.

"Facilities such as Shawholm are unique and valuable to our game, both as places of development for young players and as centers for the local community," read a statement then. of Cricket Scotland.

"They should never be taken for granted or discarded in this way; instead, they must be cherished and nurtured to ensure that a minority sport such as cricket can survive and thrive."

The governing body has urged the parties to a deal that would allow Shawholm to continue as a cricketing party and ensure the survival of Poloc, founded in 1878.

However, talks proved fruitless and it will be football rather than cricket played at Shawholm in the future.

In a letter to members, Poloc's board said: "Unfortunately, upon review by the new tenant, it has become apparent that their plans for the redevelopment and use of the site mean that it will not be possible to retain even a small cricket ground, with their intention to use the facility seven days a week and during the summer months , which means weekend or mid-week cricket cannot be guaranteed and therefore the security we hoped for cannot be given.

"I can therefore confirm that the unanimous vote taken at the extraordinary general meeting for the dissolution of Poloc Cricket Club takes effect from today Friday 31 March 2023."

The W Academy has been approached by BBC Scotland for comment.
