Pornhub will now verify government IDs in this state. Is yours next?

In June, the Louisiana State Legislature passed a bill that requires sites containing a certain percentage of sexually explicit content to verify the age of site visitors, beginning in 2023.

It has already started on popular porn site Pornhub, according to TechCrunch.

A Twitter post appears to show how the new process works, by creating an account through the AllpassTrust site, which works with LA Wallet, the state's digital ID service.

Pornhub reassures users in the notice that it does not hold any user data. In 2018, the site reported having registered 33.5 billion visits. According to the company's annual data drop (from its "intrepid statisticians"), the site has the most daily traffic from the United States.

A project manager for the LA Wallet producer told local outlet WAFB in December that personal information would not be stored.

"It does not identify your date of birth, it does not identify who you are, where you live, what part of the state you are in, or any information from your device or room. real identity. It just returns that age to say yes, that person is old enough to be allowed in," they said.

The Louisiana bill requires websites with more than "thirty-three and one-third percent" of material on their sites to focus on sexually explicit content to verify the age of visitors and that they are over 18.

It holds companies fully liable in court for exposure and related damages.

As noted by The Verge, a bill similar to Louisiana's, requiring age verification at the federal level, has been introduced in Congress by Senator Mike Lee of Utah.

A key sponsor of the Louisiana bill, Laurie Schlegel, served as a counselor for people with sex addictions, per WAFB. She also advocated for a bill that prevented young people from participating in sport in a different gender category than the one assigned at birth and deemed to target transgender youth during the summer.

"Pornography is destroying our children and they have unrestricted access to it on the internet, so if the porn companies are not responsible, I thought we should go ahead and hold them accountable," said Schlegel. WAFB, related to the Pornography Bill.

The law specifically exempts news organizations from this requirement.

Pornhub appears to be complying with the new law, but others, like XVideos, have not, according to VICE. (The outlet accessed age verification using a VPN, which people can use to avoid this requirement.)

There are concerns about privacy issues, such as data leaks or the potential for people who watch pornography related to LGBTQ topics, for example, to be rated or stockpiled, by TechCrunch.< /p>

Schlegel told Fox News that the bill imposes similar standards on online businesses as in-person businesses that are required to verify IDs.
