Porsche Taycans will charge faster and go further with the latest update

Porsche is rolling out a comprehensive, dealer-installed update for its sporty Taycan EV that delivers a substantial range boost, faster charging, updated infotainment features and more, The Drive. The modifications are available free of charge for all Taycans ever made (models 2020-2022), as Porsche again shows the advantages of the software upgrade path opened by Tesla.

The biggest change is the efficiency improvement that adds up to 31 miles of range on the WLTP cycle (slightly less in terms of EPA rating), which kicks things up a notch. Considerable inch to the Taycan's 200-mile EPA rating (based on 71.0-kWh model). Porsche has achieved this feat by disabling the front motor in Normal and Eco mode, while retaining the driver's regenerative braking settings when driving modes are switched. With the update, the first models of the year 2020 will work as efficiently as the last versions of 2022.

Porsche has also optimized thermal management to allow the battery to charge longer at its maximum rate of 270kW. This will be particularly useful if you arrive with a higher level of charge, as the system previously reduced speeds.

The other main change is to the Taycan's display-laden infotainment system. We enjoyed it during our test drive and found it easy to use, but others noticed lag in certain operations. Porsche has now updated this to improve start-up and response times, while making everything more robust. It also overhauled the head-up display and added new integrations for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, allowing both to work wirelessly. Drivers can also search for points of interest in the online navigation system and filter stations without fast chargers.

Porsche also announced several additional hardware options for the 2023 Taycans, including a panoramic roof and wiring for the company's optional Dashcam system. The only downside to the update is that it will basically take a day and you will have to take the EV to a dealership. However, Porsche said the update optimizes the Taycan's control units, allowing electric vehicles to accept more over-the-air (OTA) updates in the future. Owners will be contacted when available.
