Drinking water: Buhari government develops 6,761 water systems – Adamu

A total of 6,761 drinking water supply systems for Nigerians have been developed by the Muhammadu Buhari administration since it came to power, reports the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

In announcing this on Sunday while invited to the NAN forum in Abuja, Suleiman Adamu, Minister of Water Resources, said the programs were being developed in urban areas, small towns and rural areas.

Mr. Adamu affirmed that the government has made considerable progress in providing access to clean water in Nigeria.

The Minister said the water supply systems were producing a total of 794,334,000 liters per day and serving 32,008,600 Nigerians.

Mr. Adamu also spoke about the federal government's efforts to strengthen the nation's agriculture and food security.

To this end, the Minister revealed that 10 irrigation schemes have been completed in the country, increasing the actual irrigated area from 70,000 hectares in 2015 to 138,000 hectares currently.

"To support the country's energy self-sufficiency, 12 dams were completed with a combined water-holding capacity of 795.1 MCM and hydropower generation of 110 MW.

“Efforts have also been put in place to utilize the hydroelectric potential of 3,466 MW under a PPP agreement,” he said.

Talking about achievements in the sanitation sector, Mr. Adamu announced that 3,402 facilities have been built in institutions and public places.

He listed the locations of these facilities to include markets, schools, car parks and camps for displaced persons.

"In addition, a national survey conducted as part of WASHNORM III 2021 reported national access to basic drinking water services of 67% and access to sanitation services basis of 46%," Mr. Adamu added.

He said that the programs and projects developed in the underwater resources sector were in line with the nine priority areas of the Muhammadu Buhari administration.
