Prince Harry jokes about his New York date with Meghan Markle: 'We don't go out much'

On December 6, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle attended the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Foundation's Ripple of Hope Gala in New York City to accept an award for their "heroic" stand against "structural racism within the [royal] institution." The Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived at the event hand-in-hand and were greeted by a swarm of fans.

In November, Kerry Kennedy, president of the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Foundation, told El Confidencial's Vanitatis magazine (via People) that in standing up to the British monarchy, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex possessed the "moral courage" his father spoke of in his famous 1966 "Ripple of Hope" speech in South Africa.

“He also spoke of moral courage, saying that few would have the courage to question their colleagues, family and community about the power structure they maintained, and that is what Meghan Markle and the Prince Harry did," Kennedy explained. . "They went to the oldest institution in UK history and told them what they were doing wrong, that they couldn't have structural racism within the institution... They knew that if they did that there would be consequences, that they would be ostracized, they would lose their family, their position within this structure, and people would blame them for it. They did it anyway... I think they were heroic in taking that step."

While the Sussexes were honored with the Ripple of Hope award for such a significant reason, that doesn't mean the 1,500 gala attendees weren't subjected to Prince Harry's endearing banter.

The Sussexes sat down with Kennedy for a chat about their commitment to social change at the event, during which Harry joked that he thought attending the gala would be a "night date" for the couple. "To be honest with you, Kerry, I actually thought we were just going on a date, so I thought it was kind of weird that we were sharing the room with 1,500 people," he said. "We don't go out much because our kids are so small and so young, so it's completely unexpected. But it's nice to share a romantic evening with all of you, thanks for coming." Markle replied with a laugh, "Thank you for inviting me to this very special date."
