Prioritize the national interest in your energy transition plans – NEITI to FG

Nigeria's Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) has called for a fair, just and equitable energy transition that will prioritize Nigeria's national interest in commitments and response to the global transition process energy.

At the National Dialogue on Energy Transition organized by the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) in collaboration with the Africa Climate Foundation, BudgiT and the Natural Resources Governance Institute (NRGI), the Executive Secretary of NEITI, the Dr. Orji Ogbonnaya Orji said that Nigeria, in its considerations for switching to renewable energy, must identify opportunities in its untapped oil, gas and mineral resources.

Dr. Orji said, “NEITI believes that Nigeria's energy transition journey must be guided and strictly guided by credible information and data on the country's energy security and, more importantly, the national strategic interest.

“Nigeria must not rush into a hasty energy transition without a thorough analysis of its comparative advantage and its implications for our resources, economy, jobs and livelihoods of its citizens.”

The Executive Secretary said the clarity of Nigeria's inherent risks, risk management strategy and plans to maximize opportunities, including diversification of the economy, energy security and its related technology needs, as well as education and citizen awareness, will shape the country's overall response.

He welcomed the federal government's swift decision to roll out the national energy transition plan in February this year. He explained, “The national dialogue will stimulate public debate and commitments on the plan and ensure that its implementation is robust, equitable and responsive to the current and future needs of Nigerians.”

He reiterated, "As the world transitions from using fossil fuels to cleaner and more sustainable energy, transparency and accountability must be built into the process, including emissions reporting, disclosure of climate risks and the overall governance of the energy industry, in others to avoid the pitfalls of its past and present energy experiences.
