PSG close to renewing Messi's contract

December 30 - Argentina captain Lionel Messi, World Cup winner, has reached an agreement to renew his contract at Paris St-Germain, according to unconfirmed French media.

The 35-year-old seven-time Ballon d'Or winner helped Argentina lift the World Cup trophy by beating France on penalties in the final

Paris St Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi said earlier this month that Messi was happy at the club, adding talks of a contract extension would take place after the World Cup.

Messi, who has 12 goals and 14 assists for PSG in all competitions this season, left Barcelona for the French capital in 2021 on a two-year contract.

PSG boss Christophe Galtier has said Messi, who missed PSG's home league game against Strasbourg on Wednesday, will return to France on New Year's Eve.

"He had to return to Argentina for celebrations, receptions and we decided that he would be absent until January 1," Galtier told a press conference.

"And so he will join us, either on the 2nd or the 3rd, to be able to resume competition with us, when he will have had between 13 and 14 days of recovery."
