PTI Partners NCDMB, SNEPCO Begin Diver Training

The Petroleum Training Institute (PTI), in partnership with the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) and Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCO), has started training divers for emergency situations.

PTI Director and General Manager, Dr. Henry Adimula, revealed this Monday, during the Divers Medic Technician (DMT) training which kicked off Monday, July 25, 2022 at the PTI Conference Center, Effurun, Delta State .

Adimula, who said the institute's goal is to make it an international training center, revealed that DMT training, which is one of the many trainings the institute has had, counts six trainees for the course.

Dr Adimula said the training would last 10 days and was one of the key steps taken to ensure the increase in local content delivery.

"PTI has been bringing its quota to Nigeria for 50 years and our goal is to make PTI an international training center not only for Nigeria but also for Africa.

“One of the main objectives of this administration is to ensure increased local content and input from Nigerians in the various industries, especially the oil industry; and what we are doing today is a big step in that direction.

“This training we are doing today is what Nigerians are going to look for outside the country.

"Although we are doing this in partnership with a foreign body, our ultimate goal is that very soon the whole process will be conducted here in Nigeria and the certificate that will be obtained will be recognized internationally.

"The Divers Medic Technician course focuses on first aid training for emergencies resulting from diving activities and the training is an intensive 10 day course which will be followed by an exam.

"The institute aims to align and position itself to be very active in training for manpower availability for the Nigerian oil and gas sector; this is only the first many victories that can be achieved by the institution,” he said.

Describing it as another great achievement in PTI's history, Director of Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC), Dr. Michael Adebide, said, "Shell has been a great support regarding diving activities in Nigeria.

"In 1998, four of our PTI colleagues were trained in France under the auspices of Shell and they were the very few divers who stood out among all the other divers."

Also speaking at the event, an NCDMB official, Mr. Muhammed Ahmed, reiterated that the training, which is the first of its kind in the institution, complied with the local content guideline given by the administration headed by Buhari.

He said, "This is the first time training like this has been done at PTI in conjunction with the NCDMB and the board is really passionate about it.

"Consistent with the Board's key mandate of industry capacity, what we are doing today is consistent with that mandate."
