Reece Yeboah Talks Cos, Rare Hermès Bag Auction, Alicia Keys Cognac Ads

COS DE YEBOAH: When Reece Yeboah was young, he traveled from his home in London to Accra and back a few years later. The journey has been to do it as a man and as a designer.

His first collab with Cos is set to arrive this week and he calls it "Metamorphosis" after his experiences of coming of age in Ghana.

In an interview, the designer said that when he was 11, his mother had handed out a one-way ticket to Accra to "straighten me out" because he was having fun and was underachieving in school.

She saved for months to buy the ticket, he said, and was convinced that life in Africa with long family would help him grow.

She was right. His years in Accra transformed him and he returned to London with a new purpose.

Living in Africa, he says, "gave me an idea of ​​the importance of family" and a sense of perspective, too.

"I learned what it is to struggle - not to complain. I took ice-cold bucket baths, carried water on my head and walked miles to school. I missed the luxury of London," the designer said, who returned to the UK a few years later.

He studied fashion design, styling and founded streetwear brand Saint London Ltd. , who had a pop-up at Selfridges in 2018. He worked as a stylist and later launched his signature collection, which combines streetwear with soft tailoring.

Yeboah said his collection for Cos, a division of H&M Group, is a tribute to the his mother's spirit and her ambitions for him.

He has mixed dark hues with the bright yellow of the flag of Ghana and his jackets and shirts include patterns of butterflies and thin stripes. The collection includes caps, beanies, knitted hoodies, a varsity jacket and structured checkered wool jackets.

Yeboah said that while he may have started out designing a men's collection, the result is more fluid, with silhouettes based on signature Cos shapes.

His favorite parts of the process, he said, were creating samples, construction of concepts and "seeing that creation comes to life from the sketch.”

His ambitions are great. "Nine figures in six years," he said. "It's what's on my bedroom wall. It's not about the money. I want to be about to say 'I did this,'" Yeboah said, and he certainly got off to a good start.

Last week Yeboah and Cos held a fashion show in London featuring some of the new looks and seated front row were three top cheerleaders: Riccardo Tisci, Naomi Campbell and Edward Enninful.

Cos collaboration prices range from 35 euros for the Rising Star t-shirt 100% organic cotton at 350 euros the check coat in wool blend.
