Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi on Wednesday urged teachers to remain good role models for their students.

Obi made this known in a statement on his Twitter page, to commemorate World Teachers' Day.

October 5 each year has been declared World Teachers' Day by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

Marking the celebration, Obi applauded Nigerian teachers for their sacrifices in ensuring students receive a good education.

The former Governor of Anambra State said, “In this year of commemoration of World Teachers' Day, I applaud all Nigerian teachers for their sacrifices in ensuring that Nigerian students, all levels of learning, receive a good pedagogical and moral formation.

"Teachers are at the very heart of educational development in Nigeria.

"They form an essential and indispensable part of the education sector in our country and therefore deserve commendation and encouragement for their role in driving national development and progress.

"I encourage all teachers to strive daily to remain good role models for students, both in learning and in character, and to continually improve their knowledge and skills, in order to keep pace of the dynamic and ever-changing global education system, and be on par with their peers around the world. Happy World Teachers' Day."
