Robot Blade Runner spins in record time

While we want colleges and universities to get more involved in academic competitions, we can't deny that more people are interested in their athletics programs. Oregon State, however, has done a bit of both since its bipedal robot, Cassie, became the world's fastest bipedal robot according to the Guinness Book of World Records. You can see a video of the 100 meter race below, but don't blink. The robot rotated in about 25 seconds.

Impressive, but still not up to Usan Bolt's time of under 10 seconds for the same distance. If you want to see what it would be like, try walking a long way across a soccer field and see how far you go in 25 seconds. There aren't many technical details about the robot, but you can guess a few things just by looking at it. You can also find a bit more information about the robot and some of its siblings on the University's website.

If you think robots will never run as well as humans, we used to think the same about chess. It doesn't look like what we normally envision for a bipedal robot. Again, there's no reason for robots to look or move like we do.
