Rumor has it: Chelsea plan to trigger release clause for Leipzig striker Nkunku

Chelsea have reportedly already carried out a medical for RB Leipzig striker Christopher Nkunku in a bid to sign him at the end of this season.

Nkunku's time at Leipzig was long thought to be coming to an end, but the Bundesliga club secured his services in the latest transfer window, potentially setting him up for a 2023 departure.

Nkunku is enjoying an excellent start to the Bundesliga season, scoring four goals in seven games, and although interest in him is expected to be wide, Chelsea have used their relationship with Leipzig in a bid to move ahead of the waiting.

According to Bild, Nkunku has a release clause in his contract set at €60m, and Chelsea are ready to trigger it at the end of this campaign.

Chelsea and Leipzig have done a lot of business together before, including two-way sales of Timo Werner and advanced negotiations around young centre-back Josko Gvardiol. It seems Nkunku was also discussed at length, and the German club were willing to let Chelsea take a closer look at the wanted striker before any official offer.

Gvardiol also remaining a potential target for new Chelsea manager Graham Potter - with his price tag set at €90m - this could become one of the most expensive deals of all time.
