The man suspected of having po Ignored Salman Rushdie at an event in the United States on Friday has been charged with attempted murder.

Hadi Matar was remanded in custody without bail after pleading not guilty, the Chautauqua County, New York state prosecutor said.

Mr. Matar is accused of running onto the stage and attacking Mr. Rushdie and an interviewer at the event organized by a local education center.

Mr. Rushdie, 75, has faced years of death threats for his novel The Satanic Verses, which some Muslims consider blasphemous.

Police arrested Mr. Matar of Fairview, New Jersey, shortly after the attack at the Chautauqua facility.

Appearing in court Saturday afternoon, the suspect was wearing a face mask and a prison uniform before entering his not guilty plea.

"This is the very first step in what will invariably be a lengthy legal process," District Attorney Jason Schmidt said in a statement.
