Scholes says Man Utd star 'deserves' England spot on Grealish; admits he's 'surprised' by Casemiro

Paul Scholes has argued that Man Utd winger Jadon Sancho currently 'deserves' a place in Gareth Southgate's England squad against Jack Grealish.

A long-term target, Sancho completed a move to Man Utd last summer from Borussia Dortmund for around £73million.

The Englishman was among many United players who struggled last season as they found themselves sixth in the Premier League.

Manchester United waste little energy on the sheriff before another fortnight off

Sancho has been given a fresh start this season under new United manager Erik ten Hag. He made the most of it as he scored three goals in eight matches.

His last goal came on Thursday night as Man Utd beat Sheriff 2-0 in the Europa League group stage.

Despite his improved form, Sancho still missed out on a place in Southgate's squad for the Nations League games against Germany and Italy later this month.

But Scholes argued that Sancho should have been included before Man City star Grealish.

The £100million man is yet to score or provide an assist in five outings this season as he struggles to find his feet at the Etihad.

Scholes thinks Bruno Fernandes and Christian Eriksen are helping Sancho:

"Gareth chose his players for a reason, maybe from previous teams," Scholes told BT Sport.

"I think he probably deserves to be above Jack Grealish by the minute.

"He scored a good goal against Liverpool and showed signs tonight. He is better when he comes in and continues the game.

"He doesn't have that electrifying pace to overtake someone outside or inside. When he was good at Dortmund, he had [Erling] Haaland, [Achraf] Hakimi – he always had something 'one to bond with.

"At Manchester United, if he can partner Fernandes or Eriksen, who are smart players to partner with, he could be a good player for Man United."

Summer signing Casemiro was engaged at halftime against the Sheriff, as Scott McTominay fought his way.

The £60m ex-Real Madrid midfielder is brought into the fold by Ten Hag as he has made three appearances as a substitute in the Premier League so far .

Scholes already likes what he saw from Casemiro:

"His awareness, I love that pass around the corner. He surprised me a bit with his forward passes, his range of passes, I thought he was more of a winner, collecting the ball in midfield,” Scholes added.

"It was Kroos and Modric last year, he has more to his game and showed more of a range to his game.

"It's his first game for a while, I think he will eventually, with his qualities, make his way into the team."
