Scott Mills: “My celebrity crush? Lewis Capaldi. He's one of the funniest and most cuddly people you'll ever meet'

Hampshire-born Mills, 49, became a host on his local radio station, Power FM, aged 16. He then worked for stations in Bristol and Manchester before joining Heart FM in London in 1995. Three years later he started on BBC Radio 1's morning show. He spent 24 years at Radio 1, most recently hosting the weekday driving show. On October 31, he moved to Radio 2, where he took over Steve Wright's afternoon slot. Mills is engaged and lives in Hertfordshire.

What is your biggest fear? Heights. For Children in Need, I had to rappel from the Orbit into Olympic Park. It's the most terrifying thing I've done.

When were you happiest? Now. I moved to Hertfordshire after 25 years in London, I have a fiancée and a dog so it all fell into place.

What is the trait that you lament the most about yourself? I always bite my nails.

What trait do you most deplore in other people? Arrogance.

What bothered you the most? It was Halloween, and we were doing prank calls on Radio 1. The person in the studio before us had just been chatting with Terry Wogan, and we called his live number by mistake. So I went, "Hello, happy Halloween" thinking it was going to be a listener, and Terry said, "Well, happy Halloween to you too." I hung up in embarrassment.

Describe yourself in three words. Shy, kind and professional.

What do you think you dislike the most about how you look? I can't get rid of belly fat and moobs.

What would your superpower be? That I could listen to whenever someone spoke to me about it and listen to what they say.

Besides a property, what is the most expensive thing you ever bought? one that my fiancée won't let me light, so it's just for show.

What's your most unpleasant habit? Smoking.

What scares you about getting old? Mobility. My mom struggles with MS, and I see how hard it is.

Who's your favorite celebrity? Lewis Capaldi. He's one of the funniest and most cuddly people you'll ever meet.

Would you choose fame or anonymity? Anonymity. I can walk down the street and go to Co-op in a way Ant and Dec probably can't.

Who would you most like to apologize to and why ? Katy Perry. I hired a Russell Brand lookalike as a prank for the radio, and she thought it was actually him. When she realized that wasn't the case, she burst into tears. She was still married to him, but I didn't take into account that there were things going on that we didn't know.

If not yourself, who would you most like to be? Beyoncé.

When was the last time you cried, and why? When I left Radio 1: snotty sobs on air.

Which is closest to death? I went on a private jet with David Hasselhoff, and it was so hectic between LA and Vegas that I thought it was going to fall apart. I also thought, “The title won't be about me; it will be: David Hasselhoff and his friend."

Would you rather have more sex, money or fame? you care about the money.

What is the most important lesson life has taught you? Not to trust everyone.

Tell us a secret. A part of my body does not belong to me: it has been renewed.
