Sebastian Blanck and Isca Greenfield-Sanders talk art and marriage

In terms of artistic partnerships, Sebastian Blanck and his wife Isca Greenfield-Sanders seem to be neck and neck .

His first solo exhibition at the Miles McEnery Gallery in Chelsea will bow Thursday and run through August 31. Entitled "She's My Best Friend", the exhibition refers to Isca, also represented by the same gallery.

Blanck, a Rhode Island School of Design alumnus, spent a few years helping the artist esteemed Alex Katz at his New York studio in SoHo. (He also worked for British painter Cecily Brown and Nabil Nahas.) From the start, Blanck had a keen interest in portraiture and figurative work, according to Greenfield- Sanders, who was an undergraduate at Brown University studying painting and math when she met Blanck during her RISD days 25 years ago at an intramural softball game in Providence. After asking her out, they embarked on what became a 25-year relationship. Now married with two children, the couple also share a professional union. "Isca is a muse and I've done paintings of her since we met," Blanck said.

As shown in "She's My Best Friend", her work celebrates "little intimate moments in life that might otherwise go unnoticed," according to Greenfield-Sanders, who shared a studio and worked side-by-side with her husband for 20 years. "We both go into great detail about what it means to be a painter, speaking of light, patterns and bringing the technical side to the narrative side."

This fall, Greenfield-Sanders will unveil his next exhibition, "Passing Afternoon", in Munich at Galerie Kluser and the next one is planned for Miles McEnery. "Looking for the intimate and quiet moments shared only by two people or a group of people" appears often in their work.

As a visual person, Blanck said he often connects with and highlights " the sense he feels of something and recognizing the beautiful people "he's with." In a way, it's a practice that keeps me engaged with life and new experiences. But it also reminds you how special it is to share your life with someone and have a family with someone. With all the distractions in the world, it's a way to stay connected to your life. And it's not a digital version of it, but a version that you live in and experience,” Blanck said.
