The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that an operational incident on August 24 at Diebu Creek Flow Station, operated by SPDC, released an as yet undetermined volume of crude into the environment.

Residents of the Peremabiri community lamented the negative impact of the spill, the alleged insensitivity and negligence of SPDC.

They said the SPDC's late response to the spill caused damage to the land and marine environment and impacted a wider area.

SPDC, in a statement from its spokesman, Mike Adande, to Yenagoa, confirmed that the oil company was aware of the spill report.

Mr. Adande said, "We are working with regulators and the local community to investigate the reported incident.

"The Diebu Creek ceased injection into the Trans Niger Pipeline (TNP) on February 25, due to ongoing violations of the TNP by crude oil thieves.

"TNP is currently being tested with a water line flush."

According to locals, the release of large amounts of crude oil into the environment has polluted the Nun River, swamps and agricultural lands, causing hardship to the settlement mainly of fishermen and farmers.
