Sokoto Guber: Court admits 2 letters on Gobir's school certificates as PDP closes case

The Sokoto State Electoral Petitions Court on Tuesday admitted two letters as exhibits on the credentials of Sokoto State Deputy Governor Idris Gobir and adjourned until July 19.< /p>

The presiding judge, Judge Haruna Mshelia, adjourned the case after the Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) and its 2023 gubernatorial candidate, Alhaji Sa'idu Umar, concluded their testimonies to prove the request.

The exhibits, presented by Mr. Muyiwa Akinboro SAN, the PDP lead lawyer and Alhaji Sa'idu Umar, were from the Sabon Birni Local Government Education Authority (LGEA).

During Tuesday's session, Akinboro called State Party President Bello Goronyo, who was the last of 32 witnesses lined up to prove the motion in court.

In his testimony, Goronyo said he delegated some party members as agents and received reports of election violence and related fraud, which were compiled and submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other competent authorities.

He acknowledged that some people had been arrested for alleged abuse and wrongdoing, but could not confirm whether or not they had been prosecuted.

The party chairman informed the Court that he was not aware of any court rulings regarding the eligibility of Governor Ahmad Aliyu and his deputy, Idris Gobir, to stand for election.

Akinboro also introduced Abdulmumini Usman, INEC Sokoto's Chief of Operations, who produced election documents as evidence.

The Defendants' Lead Counsel, Chief Jacob Ochidi SAN, and the APC's Lead Counsel, Hassan Liman SAN, objected to the admissibility of the documents and cross-examined the witnesses.

The Lead Counsel for INEC, Mr. AbdulAziz Sani SAN, also concurred with the submissions of Counsel for the Respondents.

Judge Mshelia adjourned the case until July 19 so that the APC could present its defence.

It should be noted that Umar and the PDP approached the court to seek the annulment of the March 18, 2023 election which declared Governor Ahmad Aliyu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and his deputy, Idris Gobir, winners.< /p>

In their petition, the petitioners alleged that the election was flawed, arguing that it did not comply with election laws.

They further argued that at the time of the election, the respondents were not qualified to contest and therefore the votes were wrongly awarded to them.

The petitioners argued that the election had become illegal or votes lost, null and void.

They requested the Tribunal to mandate the INEC to issue a new certificate of return to the Applicant as the duly elected Governor of Sokoto State, having received a majority of the legal votes cast, or to order another election excluding the defendants.< /p>
