When the tide comes in at Porlock Weir, everything changes. A welcoming committee gathers as the water meanders through the harbor lifting boats off the seabed, while children young and old eagerly wait to jump off the small bridge into the sea.

It's where Exmoor empties into the Bristol Channel, about half an hour west of Minehead. A row of three cottages - known as Gibraltar Cottages - stand guard between the hamlet and the sea, the latter only accessible after negotiating a shoreline that is not so much shingle as mini-rock.
