Sony's new mid-range headphones borrow the premium V1 chip from the WH-1000XM5

The WH-CH720N offers an advertised 35 hours of battery life for $150.

Sony is releasing a pair of mid-range headphones that borrow some technology from the company's $400 WH-1000XM5. The new WH-CH720N are an over-ear pair using the same V1 chip from Sony's flagship model, which should help deliver high-quality sound and active noise-cancelling (ANC) for a much lower price.

The company claims the WH-CH720N's battery will last up to 35 hours with ANC on. The headphones also include support for the Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE), Sony's audio upscaling technology that can improve the sound of compressed music files on services such as Spotify. It also has multipoint connectivity and dual microphones in each earbud, which helps it deliver 20 levels of noise/ambient sound cancellation. Of course, you can change its settings with the associated Sony Headphones Connect app.

Sony has a good track record with its mid-range headphones. As with this model, the company typically carries over a few features from its higher-end cans while skimping on enough places to keep the price low. (The WH-1000XM5's second ANC processor is missing in this case.) So while they have less noise reduction than their more expensive siblings, the V1 chip should still offer excellent ANC for their price of $150. The WH-CH720N will be available in black, blue and white when it goes on sale this spring.
