President Abbas condemns Zaria killings, calls for immediate investigation

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has condemned the killing of two people in the Kofar Gayan neighborhood of Zaria, Kaduna State, in an attack by suspected terrorists on Saturday night.

According to a statement signed by the speaker's media assistant, Musa Krishi, he said the suspected terrorists invaded the area, firing sporadically, killing individuals, while abducting others.

The killings, which came just over 24 hours after several people died when parts of the central mosque in Zaria collapsed, were unfortunate and heinous, the statement said.

“Expressing his disgust at the murder of these two innocent people, President Abbas noted with concern the recurrent attacks in parts of Zaria and its surroundings in recent years.

"The lives of Nigerians, wherever they are, must be protected, hence the need for security agencies to up their game in protecting Nigerians and their property.

Mr. Abbas, who represents the federal constituency of Zaria, called for a thorough investigation into the attack and the killings to unravel those responsible.

Mr. Tajudeen noted that the people of Zaria are peace-loving and have lived in peace over the years, saying bandit activities should not be allowed to disturb the tranquility of the ancient city.

"The attack which led to the murder of our two innocent brothers in Kofar Gayan was most calamitous, horrific, tragic, heinous and disgusting.

"It is very unfortunate that while innocent people were going about their normal and legitimate activities, others were planning evil to disturb the peace that everyone enjoyed.

"The action of those behind this despicable act is condemned, and I call on security agencies to take immediate action to root out the perpetrators. This diabolical act must not be allowed to go unnoticed.

“My heart goes out to the families of those who have lost loved ones. I pray that Allah (SWT) grants the late Jannatul Firdaus and gives the families the courage to bear the painful and irreparable loss,” said M .

He also sympathized with the Kaduna State Government, the Emir of Zazzau, His Royal Highness, Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, and the people of Zaria for this unfortunate incident, the statement said.

Kaduna is one of the Nigerian states terrorized by terrorists, commonly known as bandits. Murders and kidnappings for ransom are common throughout the state, including in Zaria, the state's largest local government area.

Terrorists target peasants from vulnerable communities in the state, and many have fallen prey to kidnappers. Some were killed in captivity, while others were released after payment of a ransom.

Insecurity has remained unchanged despite efforts by the Nigerian government to control crime.
