Spray tan, short shorts and not a care in the world: my quest to have a big dark himbo summer

It was in May this year that we may have hit himbo peak. Standing around a map of the United Kingdom, England midfielder Jordan Henderson waved team-mate Jack Grealish to reveal the answer to a challenge he had taken part in. "I had to guess where you're from," Henderson said. "I want you to put where you're from on this map."

Grealish had walked around with a puppy smile, but it soon became clear that locating Birmingham , where he was born, was beyond him. The quiz host tried to help: "Originally," she said, as if speaking to a hearing-impaired person at the local nursing home, "where you are from originating". But Grealish remained stunned. Then he gestured to the map and uttered the immortal line "Is this England?" while everyone around him broke down in hysterics.

He might be pretty stupid, but Grealish is also stupidly pretty. This combination has always been what makes the himbo archetype – a word coined by a Washington Post reporter in 1988 to refer to a male version of the bimbo (albeit with less sexist baggage attached). Back then, Arnold Schwarzenegger or supermodel Fabio would have been your classic himbos, but these days the term has evolved. To be a himbo in 2022, having a nice tan and a low IQ isn't enough - you need to be completely devoid of cunning, free of jealousy, and immune to bad vibes.
