Leon Vitali, Stanley Kubrick's longtime assistant and film partner of decades, has died.
The late director's verified social media accounts confirmed Vitali's death on Sunday...writing, "It is with the greatest sadness that we have to announce that the mainstay of many of Kubrick, Leon Vitali, passed away peacefully last night. Our thoughts are with his family and all who loved and loved him." No other details were provided.
Kubrick's account is full of praise for Vitali...noting his behind-the-scenes work with his film master, but also highlighting the roles he performed on camera as an actor, including as as one of the lead roles for SK's 1975 period drama "Barry Lyndon."
The post also notes this... "Whether it's giving the performance of a lifetime as Lord Bullingdon, portraying the sinister red coat, providing BTS tech support on FMJ, and assisting at the Cannes Film Festival 4K release of The Shining, Leon Vitali was the heartbeat of Kubrick's films after the master himself." So yes, he is very important in the Kubrick universe.
As has been well documented, the guy was hopelessly devoted to Stanley... taking on the difficult role of becoming his effective right-hand man and enforcer on film sets, including for movies like 'The Shining'. "Full Metal Jacket". ' and Kubrick's latest film, 'Eyes Wide Shut.'
He's credited in every movie as "assistant director" and was even the CD for the last 2 movies. But Vitali's involvement in these films went far beyond his titles alone: he literally ran all over the set alongside Kubrick and made sure his boss' vision came to life.
