Students arrested for killing Abuja driver on suspension - Varsity

Management of Bingham University in Karu local government area of Nasarawa state said on Tuesday that three students from the institution recently arrested in connection with a murder had previously been suspended from school.

In a statement made available to reporters on Tuesday, the university's director of public affairs, Daburi Misal, explained that the alleged murder occurred after the suspects were suspended for drug abuse by the institution.

According to Misal, the statement followed viral social media reports of the arrest of the suspects of the alleged crime, by authorities of the Federal Capital Territory Police Command.

He said: "The management of Bingham University hereby expresses its deep sadness at the development and declares that the affected students were identified in March 2023 through the zero tolerance policy from college on drugs and suspended from college for being in possession of marijuana and other illicit substances.

"As required by our regulations, the students should have been taken to a rehabilitation center by their guardians and brought back to the university only after certification by the university psychiatrist.

"So it was shocking to see students who were supposed to be in re-education being paraded by the police in Abuja.

"The university, however, pledges to cooperate fully with the police in their investigation of the matter while expressing its deepest sympathy to the family of the deceased."

FCT Police Commissioner Haruna Garba paraded suspects Obasieyene Inem, Aaron Anthony and Alasan Olusegun past reporters in Abuja last Thursday and accused them of killing a driver by Bolt.

Garba said one of the suspects ordered a ride on the Bolt app to take them to and from where they purchased Indian hemp.

He said on taking them back to where they had booked the ride, the suspects discovered they had no money on them, adding that they had decided trick the driver into showing them a fake charge alert on their phone.< /p>

He said: "On June 5, 2023, at approximately 8:30 p.m., an Obasi Okeke was discovered lying in his pool of blood with his throat cut at Ngugu Close Area 11 Garki, Abuja.

"The careful investigation to determine the perpetrators of this despicable act led to the arrest of the three suspects, namely Obasieyene Inem, Aaron Anthony and Alasan Olusegun.

"During the investigation, it was discovered that the deceased was a Bolt driver who had been called by one of the suspects to transport them to the Guzape area of Abuja where they had traveled to buy some Indians hemp. Back from Guzape to their take-off place, they discovered that they had no money to pay for their trip, so they decided to play fast by showing the deceased a fake charge alert on his phone."

He added that Bolt's driver's insistence that he hadn't seen the alert led to an argument.

Garba said one of the suspects slit the Bolt driver's throat.

"The deceased insisted he had received no alerts. In the ensuing argument, one of the suspects slit the deceased's throat and fled. All three suspects have since confessed to the crime and will soon be charged,” he added.
