Long before I was born, my father, an insensitive boy from a modest family, dreamed of the stage. At just 17, when World War II broke out, he auditioned for Ralph Reader's Royal Air Force Gang Show. A few weeks later, he was in the Middle East "entertaining the troops."

When I was a child, he regaled me with so many stories on Egypt and the Middle East. It was because I was hungry to visit these territories. And since then, most have been done – with the exception of Alexandria.

A few weeks ago, some friends called to say that they rented an Airbnb in Alex, because the city is often known. Would I join them?

Why not? The advice of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is that Cairo and Alex can be visited safely, several kilometers from the devastating conflict in Gaza.

The Added benefit is that crowds at the main tourist spots would be thin. And a few days later, I was in Cairo, heading...
