A man identified simply as Energy, from Umunya, Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, was allegedly murdered by suspected herder killers.

The deceased and some other people, who have not yet been identified, were allegedly lured to a forest in the state's Aguleri Forest on Thursday by three cheering herders on the pretext that they were going to sell the cow to them.

It was determined that the victim needed a cow and was put in touch with a shepherd, who ordered him to come to their camp to buy the cow.

In a video circulating online, it was observed that the deceased had contacted a truck driver to take him to the herders' camp, which is believed to be in the Aguléri forest.

The truck driver, who spoke in the video, said: "We were on our way to see the cows, but noticed we were going into the bush, and I may not have any somewhere to reverse my vehicle.

"I told the shepherd but he insisted that we continue. We had just advanced a bit when about 10 people came out of the bush with guns and attacked us.

“They grabbed me and my brother and Energy ran away. They chased him while some took us into the bush.

"Later my brother escaped and started running, so when they chased him, I found out I was alone, so I ran to my vehicle and escaped We came back later and found Energy had been killed.”

Confirming the incident, Anambra State Police said three herdsmen involved in the murder of the man known as Energy have been arrested.

The State Police Command also confirmed that the incident took place in Aguleri.

State Police Spokesman DSP Toochukwu Ikenga said the investigation has begun and further information will be released to reporters.

Meanwhile, some villagers in rural areas of the state have launched a campaign, warning the natives to refrain from following herders into the forest to buy cattle, thinking it is cheaper.

They warned that it was now dangerous to do so, as they believed conventional herders had joined the bandits in tricking unsuspecting people into the forest, where they would be kidnapped, robbed and killed.
