Sometimes just a hangover is enough. I wanted to wake up with a headache and a hairy tongue. Like so many of us living under leaden skies for so long, I felt sun-hungry and eager for pleasure.

And so, one morning drizzly winter, I boarded a BA flight to Tenerife, the largest of the seven Canary Islands. My husband and I were bound for its west coast and the Ritz-Carlton, Abama, one of its most glamorous resorts.

He loved the tennis; my only goal was to lay down with a few long-neglected novels, a glass of wine in my hand. My copy of Thackeray's Vanity Fair had been abandoned just before Wellington met Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo.

Our week in Tenerife turned out to be a total disappointment. In the best possible way.

The lazy vacation I had been waiting for never materialized. All because a rocky Atlantic outcrop belonging to Spain, located 200 miles off the coast of Africa, won me over with its mountains, forest trails and snow-capped volcano.

With average temperatures of 22°C all year round, it is always warm and sunny. No wonder more than five million tourists visit Tenerife every year, with us Brits leading this gentle army.
