The highs and lows of an eco-friendly trip from the UK to Ibiza by train, bike and boat - the views are "stunning"... but you have to pay more for a trip with a clear conscience that took him from Newcastle to the port capital of Ibiza via London, Narbonne and Barcelona He hit a snag when one of his trains was canceled and he had to spend an unscheduled night in NarbonneCarlton a discovered that the eight-hour ferry crossing from Barcelona to Ibiza added to the "charm" of the trip
I had been offered an all-expenses-paid trip to party island - merry even included a nightclub session by Ibizan legend Pete Tong - but that didn't include travel so I had to go on my tod. Simple - there are plenty of cheap direct flights from Newcastle to Ibiza. Except I don't fly. Not anymore. Not in Europe anyway. I chose to take high speed trains to Barcelona and an overnight ferry to the island. And I packed up my Brompton bike for a little pedal assist.
The ferry — there's a choice of three services — leaves Barcelona at 10 p.m., arriving at the Port of Ibiza eight hours later. I could have arrived in Barcelona from Newcastle in a day, but with some business to do in London, I chose a relaxing start to the trip by taking the East Coast Main Line and spending a night in the capital. I booked a cheap hotel near St. Pancras International and set the alarm to "stupidly early" to catch the first Eurostar of the day, the 6am service to Paris.
