The Blakeney Hotel is the grand dame of the North Norfolk coast: expensively dressed, well-bred, self-assured - and has been around for ages.

It occupies a prime position on the quayside, with spectacular views of the estuary and marshes salt flats to Blakeney Point and the seal colony.

It's expensive in the spring and summer, with a loyal clientele, many of them during our stay winter midweek are of a certain age. A couple is heard telling a waitress that they have been regulars for 40 years.

In return for this loyalty, customers are assured of a service seasoned, tastefully decorated with a nautical theme, formal dining room, indoor pool, full-fledged gym, and plenty of space to sit and think.

Go between now and Easter and there are deals. We're on a dinner, bed and breakfast package for £330, which is still plenty, but nearly £100 cheaper than normal. We were offered a choice of room - either a small one overlooking the estuary or something larger on the garden side.

Of course we choose the former, which even has a balcony with table and chairs. It's a nice piece...
