The little treasures we found during house clearances | Letters
Re hoarding (you be the judge, December 2), while going through the very many boxes of my father's fire with several necessary trash bags by my side, I found a small envelope, sealed , split and carefully resealed with Sellotape. I could feel two tiny hard bumps inside.
On the flap of the envelope he had written in pencil "Contains a small screw to (optionally) attach sunglasses". At one point he had added a "2" and an "S" to the black ballpoint pen - "2 small screws". There was also an asterisk in blue ballpoint pen referring to a note on the side, "* Turns out too small!" How could I throw this?Cat BraceyBristol
Five years ago I emptied the South Wales bungalow of my aunt Muriel. In his office, I discovered a two-inch metal spike neatly placed in a small plastic pouch. A tag attached to her schoolteacher script read, "The nail that punctured my tire during the miners' strike." Stephen BibbySilchester, Hampshire
When my father died, my mother was able to bring to the police station for disposal the tube of mustard gas that it had been babysitting since the first world war.Margaret SquiresSt Andrews, Fife
Cleaning her mother's house after her death, a friend of mine found many boxes of different sizes in her kitchen cupboards, all neatly labeled. One of them said "String - too small to be of any use". Bob Dawson Greenmount, Greater Manchester
My late father had a box labeled "Pieces of string too short to be useful". I never understood if it was just a joke, but there were bits of string.Rollo BruceFoscot, Oxfordshire
