Theophilio RTW Spring 2023

When a designer's primary mission is to help make their friends feel well, this energy is often contagious. It's an award Edvin Thompson of Theophilio continues to thrive on.

"Look at the energy here," he said backstage. “The camaraderie shows that the brand is inclusive. Camaraderie is everything to me - it's a big part of my ideals as a designer."

For spring, Thompson fused visual elements from her Jamaican roots with leftover pop stars from the late '90s - riffing on the low-rise leather chaps, skintight snakeskin pants, tiny skirts and lace-up stilettos that were essential to music videos from her childhood.

"I really look back to this era a lot - the designs celebrated the body and I felt that they were very American. There was a lot of denim, a lot of bright colors. It reminds me of the first time I came to America, so I celebrate that," he said.

This season, the designer has moved forward with a focus on more intricate construction, pleasing colors and salable logo products like chain necklaces, rhinestone t-shirts and silk blouses printed with his neoclassical "T" insignia. A cast including model Precious Lee kept the crowd's spirits up, as did the common party favors placed on every front-row seat.

Thompson's rare sequined gowns, iridescent denim suits and feathered centerpieces of carnival were the mix he hopes to continue to promote the "Caribbean style and create this bridge to the world".
