The plaid shirt — last seen hanging around the coffee machine in the sixth-grade common room or buying wicks at B&Q — is having a fashion moment.

During the Bottega Veneta Spring/Summer 2023 fashion show at Milan Fashion Week, Mossy strolled in a sky blue shirt with sea green hatching, relaxed cuffs, unevenly rolled up, low-rise blue jeans and a white ribbed cardigan. It's Marlon Brando, pure muscle as New Jersey docker Terry Malloy in On the Waterfront, but also skinny Kurt Cobain onstage with Nirvana in the early 1990s. There were plenty of benefits even before Kate Moss did give it a makeover at Milan Fashion Week. a land grab for what used to be called streetwear. Trendy young gunslingers walking their French bulldogs through east London parks are as likely to be wearing hiking boots and fleeces as they are sneakers and shiny puffer jackets.

How to wear the shirt plaid and make it fashionable, however, that's the question. Most of us can't hope to recreate what Kate Moss wears and expect to look like Kate Moss, the more that's a shame. Watching effortlessly is not the same as simply not making an effort. For the plaid shirt to work, you have to dress it up a bit. A leather jacket and thick loafers enhance it well, you will notice it. Or flip your layers and wear it as an open jacket over a ribbed polo neck in a bright contrast color.
