They say an Olyphant never forgets. That's why Timothy Olyphant is willing to talk about losing the role of Captain Kirk to J.J. Abrams' Star Trek films.

The Justified actor, 55, said on "Happy Sad Confused" podcast that the role ultimately went to Chris Pine, 42, because he was younger.

"Here's what I can tell you about Star Trek: I walked in and auditioned no not for Captain Kirk, but I remember reading with J.J. Abrams and he's just a lovely, lovely guy. And just a really nice audition process," Olyphant said. "Somewhere in that, I was auditioning for Doc, he's like, 'I already have a guy for Doc, so I don't need you for this. But I don't have a Kirk.'"

Olyphant said it was a near miss.

"I believe it was one of those things where it's like, they might have- been ready to hire me, but they wanted someone younger, and [Abrams] was having trouble finding someone younger," he said. "And somewhere along the line, J.J. called and said, "I found a guy, younger, who's really good."

Pine was also Kirk in Abrams' 2007 film, Star Trek > its sequels, 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness and 2016's Star Trek Beyond.

Olyphant maintained that it was nothing personal.

"Since then I've met Chris Pine and I'm a huge fan of his both on and off screen. I like this guy. He's a good guy."

He added: "It seems very show business, but I had the honor, we're gonna say honor, going to the Golden Globes a year…and I spent most of the night at the bar with Chris Pine. I really adored him. What a great guy. I really like his work. He's part of from those guys who make it look simple and easy."

Abrams also received a positive review.

"Audition sucks," Olyphant said, "and the fact that I fondly remembering the audition process says a lot about J.J. Abrams and what a wonderful man this guy is."
