Troops ransack IPOB/ESN enclave, capture gunmen and firearms

Nigerian Army and State Security Service (SSS) troops have destroyed an outlawed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB)/Eastern Security Network (ESN) enclave in Asaba, Delta.

Director of Army Public Relations Onyema Nwachukwu said in a statement that the raid was carried out by troops from the 63rd Brigade garrison under the 6th Division and SSS officers during a clearance operation on Saturday.

Mr. Nwachukwu said the operation was part of the sustained effort to rid Nigeria of crime.

He said troops raided the fortified enclave in the middle of a forest in the early hours of Saturday.

According to him, the troops overpowered the IPOB fighters in the firefight that followed the encounter, forcing them to abandon their hiding place in disarray.

"Troops captured one of the fleeing fighters and recovered five AK 47 rifles, three pump-action semi-automatic shotguns, a G3 rifle and a single-barrel pistol.

"Other items recovered include live cartridges, an electric saw, machetes, an ax and an IPOB flag.

"Troops have destroyed the enclave and are logging the forest in pursuit of fleeing fighters.

“Army Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja commended the troops and other security agencies for their efforts in the ongoing operations and instructed them to maintain the momentum to restore common sense in the region,” he said.
