Turbulence remains a major cause of injury to passengers and crew, even though airlines have steadily improved their overall accident rates in recent years.

A Lufthansa flight from Texas to Germany is one of the latest examples. The Airbus A330 reported severe turbulence over Tennessee last Wednesday and was diverted to Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia. Seven people were taken to hospital with injuries deemed minor.

And on Friday, a business jet was rocked by severe turbulence above over New England, causing a rare passenger to die.

Climate change is expected to worsen turbulence over the next few decades, experts say, even though improving weather forecasts will help.
