Two farmers killed by landmines in Kaduna

The Kaduna state government said on Friday that two farmers were killed in Chikun local government on Thursday after the vehicle they were traveling in ran over a landmine suspected to have been planted by terrorists operating in the region.

State Commissioner for Homeland Security and Home Affairs Samuel Aruwan said in a statement that the incident happened around 2:00 p.m. as the victims returned with farm produce.

Mr. Aruwan said the victims' vehicle ran into a landmine in Zangon Tofa, Kabrasha local government area.

Chikun is perhaps the most terrorized area in the state with gangs of gunmen freely abducting residents and travelers.

Farmers were either forced off their farmland or made to pay gang protection taxes before they were allowed to farm.

The names of the farmers who were killed in the attack were Babajo Alhaji-Tanimu and Safiyanu Ibrahim.

He said the Kaduna state government was awaiting further details on the incident from security agencies.

“In the meantime, Governor Nasir El-Rufai offered his condolences to the families of the citizens for this unfortunate incident.

"The governor who prayed for the rest of the souls of the victims called on the people of the region to remain calm," the statement read.
