The ride-sharing company announced the launch through a press release on Wednesday. Uber is partnering with Boston-based Motional, an autonomous vehicle company founded two years ago as part of a partnership between Hyundai and auto parts maker Aptiv. The robotaxis come in the form of modified all-electric Hyundai Ioniq hatchbacks.

According to Motional's press release regarding the launch, autonomous vehicles (AVs) will simply be an additional option for Uber users requesting rides in Las Vegas, if available. They won't just appear as eerily empty ghost cars, however - the Ioniqs have a pair of "Vehicle Operators" who oversee operations and help drivers with their needs.

Motional and Uber have added the operators in preparation for a completely driverless service they want to go public next year. In the press release, Motional Vice President of Marketing Akshay Jaising said, "Las Vegas is the first of many cities in which Motional AVs will become a daily transportation option for Uber customers looking a safe and convenient journey."

Learn more about the partnership's long-term plans:

This service is the first in Motional's 10-year business partnership with Uber that will see Motional's Level 4 autonomous vehicles (AVs) deployed for transportation and deliveries on the Uber network in major cities across the United States . The robotaxi public service will first launch in Las Vegas before later expanding to Los Angeles, California.

Motional says the launch makes it the first company of its kind to partner with a major ridesharing network.

Vegas users who want to take a ride in a robotaxi can select options for UberX or Uber Comfort Electric.
