UNILAG SSANU, NASU boo union leaders vow to continue strike

Members of the Association of Senior Staff of Universities of Nigeria (SSANU) and the Union of Non-Academic Staff of Universities and Other Allied Institutions (NASU) of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) have protested the decision to suspend the workers' strike by the national trade union leadership.

Protesters, who booed national union leadership representatives at a campus convention on Wednesday, also violently chased away NASU and SSANU branch presidents and other executive committee members .

They said they were not a party to the decision to suspend the strike without payment of the five months wages withheld during industrial action, and vowed to continue the strike.

They accused union leaders of being bribed by the government.

But SSANU National Vice President Abdulssobur Salaam, who addressed the angry crowd at the university, said the problems had been resolved and normality had already returned.

Demonstration

In videos obtained by PREMIUM TIMES, workers constantly interrupted Mr. Salaam and other leaders of the two unions who addressed them on Wednesday.

They accused the JAC of deciding to suspend the strike without the consent of the workers, who they say made the decision for the industrial action.

Some of the workers chanted "No work, no pay", while others carried signs with the same inscriptions.

They also reportedly pelted some of the leaders with water bags and stones, forcing them to escape further harassment and humiliation.

Mr. Salam, however, said normality had been restored after explaining to the workers why the leaders of the two unions had decided to suspend the strike for two months.
