USA beat Canada in a Concacaf Classic to secure the title and a place at Paris 2024

July 19 – BBVA Stadium in Monterrey, Mexico was abuzz for the clash of Concacaf giants, world champions USA and Olympic champions Canada.

It was the final that everyone had been waiting for and that most had wanted to see. USA and Canada had dominated the competition from the start and they worked their way to the final with neither team conceding a goal.

The United States are yet to concede a goal, earning regional honors and an automatic berth at the 2024 Olympics in Paris with a 1-0 win delivered by an Alex Morgan penalty.

It was sweet revenge for the United States over the Canadians who beat them 1-0 in the semi-finals of the Tokyo Olympics last year en route to the gold medal. < /p >

After a spectacular pre-game show that saw Skip Marley perform the tournament anthem, it was the turn of the United States and Canada to entertain a large Mexican crowd who came to see some of the greatest women's soccer names.

They did not disappoint.

USA opened at a blistering pace and within a minute Mallory Pugh had a shot cleared at the post by Kallen Sheridan.

Moments later, Sophia Smith challenged from the top of the box to face Morgan who curled the ball just wide of the Canada post.

The US was attacking in waves and seemed unstoppable. Lindsey Horan, towering in midfield, saw a shot blocked from the edge of the box.

Canada were desperate to relieve the pressure and Nichelle Prince gave them some breathing room down the left, beating her defender into the box but sinking her shot into the arms of USA goalkeeper Alyssa Naaher. A minute later, she does the same thing. T

The match lasted just seven minutes and the pace was relentless.

After the burst of intensity from the United States, Canada began to step into the game. In the 16th minute, Prince ducked between two defenders on the left again to see his shot deflected onto the roof of the net. Janine Beckie's corner was caught by Naaher.

In the 20th minute, Jessie Fleming shot from the edge of the American penalty area.

Both teams squandered chances without really testing the keepers until in the 30th minute, after a period of sustained pressure from Canada, Pugh collected the ball in his own half and headed towards Canada's goal. His shot from the upper right side of the penalty area was brilliantly caught by Sheridan diving to his right. Sheridan went on to win the tournament's Golden Gloves award.

In the 33rd minute, the Mexican wave began to sweep over the stadium. The United States seemed to sink with the wave in Canada's box with Alex Morgan's move only broken on the whitewash.
