US imposes visa ban on Nigerians who disrupted elections

The United States announced on Wednesday that it has imposed visa bans on people who disrupted Nigeria's recent elections.

In a statement, the US State Department quoted Secretary of State Antony Binken as announcing the ban on Anonymous Persons.

“We are committed to supporting and advancing democracy in Nigeria and around the world. Today, I am announcing visa restrictions for specific individuals in Nigeria for undermining the democratic process during a recent Nigerian election,” Mr. Blinken said.

He said some family members of those people may also be subject to the restrictions.

Mr. Blinken added that the visa restrictions are specific to certain people and are not directed against the Nigerian people or the government of Nigeria.

The decision to impose visa restrictions, he said, reflects the United States' commitment to supporting Nigerian aspirations to fight corruption and strengthen democracy and the rule of law.

Recent elections held in Nigeria include gubernatorial elections in Osun, Ekiti and Anambra states.

Elected governors in these states have been sworn in, the most recent being Ademola Adeleke as Governor of Osun.

Nigeria is expected to hold general elections on February 25 and March 11 to elect new leaders, including a new president and parliament.
