We use our blood to run public universities - ASUU

Professors under the auspices of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have revealed that they use their blood to run public universities in the country.

The union made the disclosure on Monday.

DAILY POST recalls that ASUU members had engaged in an indefinite strike in February of this year.

The union started the strike because of the non-implementation of the agreement reached with the union by the federal government in 2009.

The union said Monday that its members have used their blood to run public universities across the country.

The union added that it would not sacrifice its members.

The union has insisted that it will resist any effort to turn intellectuals into slaves of irresponsible leaders.

ASUU President at the University of Ibadan, Professor Ayo Akinwole made the statements via a statement made available to DAILY POST.

Akinwole in the statement urged Nigerians to ignore the lies of the federal government.

He explained that the government was far from responding to any of the union's seven demands.

Akinwole, while speaking, further insisted that if ASUU does not continue this struggle, there will be no university for new people.

Akinwole said, “Professors in Nigerian public universities have used their blood to run public universities and support them.

“The Union will not sacrifice the welfare of its members and will resist any effort to turn intellectuals into slaves of irresponsible leadership.

“We waited 14 months from December 2020 to February 2022 before declaring this strike. I say 14 months notice, 14 months of commitments and the Inter-Religious Council of Nigeria intervened in 2021 when we would have declared the strike We gave them a month with no result.

"The heroes are gone before they are appreciated but our union will not die. We will not die. We will be alive to carry out this fight.

"If ASUU does not continue this fight, there will be no university for newcomers."
