What will Daniel Lee's creative vision be for Burberry?

LONDON — Will Daniel Lee follow the same playbook as when he was at Bottega Veneta?

For a brand like Burberry that is so steeped in its Britishness and history, Lee's choice, a British designer, for creative director means he understands the design codes of the house and can disrupt it without pushing it to the limit to become a whole new brand. Burberry is one of the few luxury brands to be an official supplier to the royal household.

Christopher Bailey's Burberry was too safe, but in its time it attracted the new faces of fashion horizon fashion like Cara Delevingne, Romeo Beckham, and in 2016 he launched a collaboration with actor and musician Kris Wu, the brand's first ambassador in China.

Despite Riccardo Tisci's checkered past at Givenchy, where he was creative director from 2005 to 2017, it didn't imitate the same connection with Burberry. He tried by introducing a new house monogram; TB logos and bringing his list of famous friends to brands including Kanye West, Marina Abramović and Nicki Minaj.

Fortunately for Lee, Tisci has already paved the way for change he can take over — Burberry is involved in sustainability, has growing digital activity in NFTs, and consistently invests in cultural curations across the country.

News of Lee's appointment drives London Stock Exchange shares up 4 .4% to 17.58 pounds in mid-morning trading. And buyers are already gearing up for her February 2023 show.

"Bringing Daniel Lee back to the UK is exciting and I can't wait to see the rendition of such a British icon, and his take on globally recognized designs, from the trench coat to the instantly recognizable Burberry check,” said Simon Longland, Head of Menswear and Womenswear at Harrods.
