Why I'll never regret the bikini selfie that caused a storm

Breaking her silence on the holiday photo that sparked a global debate, former Vogue editor ALEXANDRA SHULMAN says...Why I'll never regret the bikini selfie that caused a storm

Whoever thought a photo of a 59-year-old woman in a rather plain bikini would make the headlines headlines around the world - but that's what happened five years ago when I posted a selfie on Instagram.

I was there in a friend's room in Greece, grabbing a book and a towel, when I decided to take a quick photo. I was wearing a Boden two-piece and my hair was wrinkled.

I had no makeup on and the room was a mess, but when I looked to myself, I just thought how happy and relaxed I was. My caption was "It's time for the boat trip".

Five hours later we came back and my partner, David, told me shouted to come up to the bedroom. I found him crouched on the ground, looking at his phone. "Sebastian [Shakespeare, then this newspaper's columnist] says your bikini picture is big news," he told me.

David had no idea I had taken the picture - and he doesn't do Instagram - so he was somewhat taken aback by this information.

' How strange, I thought before checking my own phone to see if I could find out more. And indeed, there was an email, still from the Mail asking me to write an article about wearing a bikini.

But I was on vacation and didn't want to do anything resembling work, so I said no.

It took me until now — five years later — to put pen to paper.
