Why Qatar 2022 is the biggest W'Cup tournament – Oliseh

Former Super Eagles manager Sunday Oliseh says current 2022 FIFA World Cup is best tournament Africa has ever played, reports The PUNCH< /em>.

For the first time in its history, Morocco will play a World Cup semi-final against France after beating Portugal 1-0 in the quarter-finals.

The Atlas Lions topped Group F, finishing ahead of Belgium, Croatia and Canada, to advance to the round of 16 of the competition. They then overcame 2010 champions Spain in the round of 16, beating them 3-0 on penalties.

They will face defending champions France at Al Bayt Stadium in Doha on Wednesday.

Speaking ahead of the semi-final against defending champions France, Oliseh called the tournament the biggest tournament for Africa, with every team representing the continent having won at least one match.

"As far as Africa is concerned, this is the biggest tournament that my continent (Africa) has ever organized, not only because we have an African nation and an Arab nation in semi-final for the first time, but because every African team that has come here has won at least one game,” Oliseh told a FIFA Technical Study Group press conference.

Senegal in Group A beat Qatar and Ecuador, Cameroon edged Brazil by just one goal after playing out a thrilling 3-3 draw with Serbia, Tunisia won also beat France 1-0 while Ghana were also 3-2 winners over South Korea.

"Senegal reached the second round and played very well despite the absence of their best players," he added.

He also praised Morocco ahead of their fiery semi-final clash against the French champions.

"Morocco made the most of their compact defense and the whole team works so hard without the ball.

“Sofiane Amrabat has also done a fantastic job of filling in the gaps. And when they go into defensive mode, they have triangles everywhere. Playing with triangles makes it difficult for opposing players to play a pass and break lines without being pushed out. And how did it work for Morocco? They only conceded one goal, which was not scored by the opponent but by themselves."

Morocco have not conceded a goal to an opposing player in this World Cup, the only goal against them being Nayef Aguerd's goal against Canada.

"Listen, we've had great players who have played in the European League. In fact, we are the only ones and the South Americans and the Europeans; we are the ones who have played football in the Champions League what it is. The variety, the beauty that goes with it, you know and now the Arab world has joined us, which is great as well,” added Oliseh.
