William Shatner called Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin spaceflight a profound experience upon landing on Earth - but now, he says...it was actually a huge disappointment.

The 'Star Trek' OG has a new book coming out - titled "Boldly Go: Reflections on a Life of Awe and Wonder" - and Variety got a snippet this week...that highlights how WS < em >actually felt as it soared into the afterlife above our stratosphere.

Here's the quote everyone mentions - it starts with Will saying he thought a rocket into space would be a huge, enlightening catharsis...thanks to Hollywood representations.

Instead, however, Captain Kirk felt the exact opposite: "I've discovered that beauty isn't out there, it's here, with all of us. Leaving that behind has made my connection with our little planet even deeper."

There's more... William says his spaceflight has left him incredibly overwhelmed with grief. He says: "It was one of the strongest feelings of grief I have ever experienced. The contrast between the vicious coldness of space and the nurturing warmth of the Earth below filled me with a overwhelming sadness." He says the thought of us humans destroying filled him with dread.

Will adds, "My space trip was meant to be a celebration; instead, it felt like a funeral."

Remember, Will was visibly emotional when they landed...but as he was trying to convey something to JB, the guy kinda interrupted his thought by popping champagne.
