Words by the Water book festival lowers cost of living

A Lake District Book Festival is canceled due to the cost of living crisis, with organizers unsure of its long-term future.

Words By The Water was due to be held in Keswick in March 2023.

Director Leah Varnell said there was a "pinch movement" increased costs and lower ticket sales.

The announcement came shortly after organizers of the Keswick Mountain Festival announced that they would postpone the 2023 event due to costs.

Ms Varnell told BBC Radio Cumbria the cancellation of Words By The Water had been a " incredibly difficult and heartbreaking decision".

'So uncertain'

She said the festival was for the first time. again since the coronavirus pandemic in March with viewership numbers "back to where we hope they are".

But during a sister festival in Totnes, Devon, in July, ticket sales had "absolutely plummeted", with Ms Varnell blaming the fall on the cost of living.

'People feel it and worry about it,' she said, adding, 'The first things you give up if you're worried about money are hobbies or nice things you can do without when you have to pay your. ..
